HOW PLACE INSPIRES
June 5, 2025 instagram post:
Tuesday’s dinner party was something special. We called it “A Seat at the Table”, a gathering for people whose passion is to make gatherings special. Twenty-five seats around the table were filled with powerhouse people in the Michigan and Ohio wedding community, people known to instagram as visionary and accomplished and known to us on Tuesday for having incredible heart and grit.
The party had rules. Guest list under wraps. First names only with no mention of business names until the end of dinner. Intentional conversation highlighted a sense of place – the places we’re drawn to, the places that shape us, and how place shapes our work. Each course of the locally sourced dinner signaled a new discourse question. We listened, we related, we laughed. Might have teared up a couple of times.

I’m still reflecting, still unpacking the stories, the conversations, the dynamic of Tuesday. One of the things that struck me most in the answers around that special table was the way guests described their “happy place” and why they live where they do. Again and again it came back to feeling connected to the people of that place. Whether it was a strong colleague community in Detroit, generations of family in Saginaw, grandkids in Kalamazoo, ride-or-die friends in Traverse City, or grocery store conversations in close-knit towns, this particular gathering of people really treasured their people. Of course. They are people whose passion is making gatherings meaningful for other people. Of course they treasure the places where their people are.
We could gather this group around picnic tables and cold pizza and discuss pigeons. I would still walk away inspired. But it was, after all, a gathering of people who love to make gatherings as beautiful as they are meaningful. Therefore it was only fitting that eighteen companies collaborated to create this dinner scene. Also fitting that we set the original vineyard vision, photographed it between wind gusts, then moved living room furniture aside to relocate the whole scene in forty-five minutes. Those are my people. Tuesday was my happy place.
